Undertakers’ or funeral directors’ job is to make arrangements for funeral services and other related needs and requirements. To be successful in this profession the undertaker performing these duties should have certain important and unique skills and qualities.

As his services may be required at any hour of the day, an undertaker must be open to working at odd hours too. This is essentially an outdoors task, which will need him to be outside the office for most of the time.

To be an undertaker, a person should be able to communicate well and should accommodate the opinions of others. With clients hailing from many religions, cultures and communities he should be able to interact with and manage each one of them efficiently. Understanding and compassion will be of much importance as he performs his job. Undertakers must have extensive knowledge and deep respect for the religious sentiments and beliefs of different cultures and ethnic groups. They should also be familiar with the funeral rites and customs of burial of various sects.

Excellent management and the ability to organise are essential skills for an undertaker. He must also have leadership skills and must be able to coordinate with a large number of people – from the clergy members to the local florist.

An undertaker must be smart in legal matters and should know the legal formalities to be followed, or the necessary approvals needed from the State authorities before conducting funeral services. He will have to be fully aware of rules to be followed for the purpose of collecting death certificates or claims for insurance.

Lastly, an undertaker should make sure that his driver’s licence is updated and that he can drive the hearse or funeral limousines during the ceremony.
