Prospective Pet Owners And The Essential Pet Supplies
November 5, 2010 by Guest Author · Leave a Comment
As a prospective new pet owner, you may not know where to start when choosing a pet or shopping for what it needs. Before you make that choice, make sure you are aware of the essential pet supplies specific to your pet. After you have taken care of its basic needs, you can go wild with finding all the treats and toys to give it an extra happy life.
Dogs are a common pet, but not everyone knows what they need. Dog bowls, a bed or crate, collar and leash are the most basic supplies. When it comes to food, not all foods are created equal. Research food types and pay attention to its special dietary needs. Toys will keep the dog entertained.
Cats are a little easier to handle. Food bowls are needed, as with dogs, but go for stainless steel if you can, high impact plastic if you must. Your cat needs a bed that they feel comfortable with. A cat carrier may seem unnecessary for your lifestyle, but should be purchased anyway. You will need it should the cat need a vet. Posts can be worth the money and can save your couch from mischievous clawing.
There are many rodents that make excellent pets, such as hamsters. For food, buy your hamster pellet rather than seeds unless you are prepared to monitor its eating habits. Bedding should be purchased in abundance; it should be replaced often, absorbent, and deep enough for the hamster to dig through. The hamster will need a chew toy. You do not want to let it chew its cage.
Be careful if you choose a reptile; tank size is very important. A small tank can make a reptile unhealthy. A large tank can lead to it growing too big to handle. Make sure you provide the creature with a water source. Foods vary by species, but some require live feed (crickets, for example). Research the feeding habits of the desired reptile before you buy it to make sure you are comfortable feeding it.
For reptiles and amphibians, purchase a heat lamp, thermometer and plants. The plants are definitely essential to healthy frog living. A humidity gauge is good for a frog tank. Some reptiles require substrate, a floor covering of loose wood chips and other materials. Other reptiles (like turtles) require a body of water. Frogs require both.
Like reptiles and amphibians, fish will need a tank. However, fish need a pump and filter. You will need a heater and thermometer. You should line the bottom of the tank with gravel, and make sure you have a fish net from day one (in case you need to remove the fish). Fish are easy to feed, as most will enjoy floating food flakes. All aquarium tanks require dedicated cleaning supplies and time to clean the tank!
The first step in buying a bird is choosing a cage. Just like with the reptiles, cage size is important, although for a different reason. A parrot will be stifled in finch cage, and a finch can get out of a parrot cage. Size does matter, as does the distance between bars and the style of opening. Wood and rope perches are preferable to plastic. Get seed for your breed of bird, and treats that are unique for your bird’s breed as well.

November 5, 2010 by Guest Author · Leave a Comment
In many families their pets are just as much a part of their family as their children are. A lot of families take their pets everywhere they go. One way to insure everyone involved will have a good time is to send your pet through pet training.
Many places offer training for your animals depending on where you live. You can go to pet stores or sometimes have a personal pet trainer. Going through pet training is great for both the pet as well as the owner. This can teach both of you to work together and learn how to read each other. Think of this as a team effort not just something you are doing to your dog or cat.
Many cities have dog parks now available to have a safe place for you to take your animals. This is a great place to socialize with other pet owners and let your dog out of the house. If you are in an apartment this can be great to give your pets some room to run.
Going places with a well trained animal is a much easier time than with a pet who is not well controlled. Teaching them how to behave in public and what is expected of them is one of the reasons to go through pet training. The animals will learn to respond to your voice and commands. This helps whenever your dogs are in a crowded area. You can speak commands and they know what you want them to do.
Bonding with your dog is another great benefit of taking a training class. This gives you and your dog time to learn about each other and learn how you can work together. You can learn what truly makes them happy and what drives them. They can also learn the boundaries you have for them and how you want them to act in certain situations.
Training your dogs is a daily process. You can not expect to go once or twice a week to training and your dog know what to do. You must take time to work with them at home and reinforce what they are learning in class. Working daily with your animals is a great way for you to enjoy your dogs company and teach them the necessary tricks. Remember they have short attention spans much like young children. Don’t try to work too long at one time.
The price of pet training can vary depending on where you have it done. There are the pet superstores that offer the training. If you choose to go with a private trainer then the prices good be higher. Talk with the trainer you are considering and get a feel of how they work with the animals and how they will work with you to help train them.
There are many different benefits you can reap from putting your animals through pet training. Always keep it fun for you as well as your dogs. This will insure that you have a great time and that your animals do not get stressed. Take the time to bond with your dogs and enjoy what you are doing. This will pay off in the end for you and your well behaved animal.

5 Tips To Set Up The Best Aquarium For Tropical Fish
October 27, 2010 by Guest Author · Leave a Comment
Tropical fish are widely loved and beautiful to look at. People can get hours of enjoyment from watching their fish swim around in their environment. They can be relatively easy to take care of as long as you do your homework before getting your own tropical fish.
If you dream of setting up a good aquarium for tropical fish, these few easy guidelines will set you on the right path.
Make sure you get a tank large enough for the fish you’ll be putting into it. Get everything else you need before you buy the tank. Your fish will not do as well in a smaller tank and you can easily buy too many fish for it. Make sure it is also large enough to add whatever foliage you will need.
Use the necessary type of water needed for the fish you’ll be putting into the tank. You can’t just fill a bucket with tap water and fill up the tank. There are steps you must take to provide your fish with a thriving environment. When you research the type of fish you want to add to your tank, make sure you also research what type of water is best for them.
Your tank will require some maintenance. Make sure you consistently change your filters and that the water is kept as clean as possible. You will also need to remove excrement and algae from the tank at regular intervals. If you’re going to be gone, you’ll need to have someone come in and do these things for you. Don’t neglect the maintenance part just because you think it’s too much work.
Find the perfect place for the tank. Choose a place that will enable your fish to thrive and not one that will make them look the prettiest. Keep them away from areas that are too warm. The temperature of the water must be controlled and be consistent, so keep your fish away from sources of heat such as fireplaces, or sun rooms. They will get all the heat they need from the aquarium lamp.
Don’t fill your tank before the foliage and decoration items are placed. Most tropical fish require a certain amount of water in the tank. By placing the foliage and other items after you fill the tank, you will have to move the water with your arm. Fill it part way and then place everything in where you want it and finish filling it up to the necessary amount.
When you are done, you can relax and enjoy watching your fish. The effort you invest into setting up a good aquarium is nothing compared to the joy that your fish will provide.

Proper Horse Hoof Care
October 27, 2010 by Guest Author · Leave a Comment
It is important to have the proper horse supplies for your horse. One area that you need to have on hand is hoof care supplies. Horse owners need to remember to take care of their horse properly, and that means hoof care daily.
Frequently changing and maintaining your horse’s hooves is a dramatically important aspect of owning a horse. You need to be sure that your horse never has long hooves. Keep them trimmed to avoid problems later on with the horse.
Horseshoes are also used to protect the hooves. They protect the hooves so there is less chance of a hoof cracking, breaking off, or being uneven. All of these issues can cause your horse to eventually go lame if left unattended.
Veterinarians can give great recommendations to you. They can tell you what type of shoe and horse supplies you need to use for your horse. Since each horse is different, and horses are used for different things, it is important to speak with a professional and get their advice.
For example, there are shoes that are made specifically for equestrian sports. Sports, such as racing or jumping, will require a lot of traction. A horseshoe gives the horse the best option for hoof health and traction.
A horse does have the option of going barefoot, however. This option is best for horses that don’t have any special needs. They also should have healthy hooves that don’t grow too long or have any signs of deformities.
Hooves will need to be trimmed, regardless of whether your horse wears horseshoes or not. Barefoot hooves are a little easier to pick clean than horseshoes. Your horse’s hooves will need to be cleaned daily to get out any rocks or debris that may be stuck inside it.
It is important to have the right horse supplies for your animal. Hoof care should be a top priority. Preventing breakage in your horse’s hooves is a good measure to have.

How To Take Photos Of Cats
October 24, 2010 by Guest Author · Leave a Comment
You’ll love the comments you receive as your friends look at the many photographs of your pets around you home. However, these pictures serve another very important role in emergencies and insurance, can provide photo’s of your missing cat if they are lost. The chances of your cat being returned safely increase significantly if you are able to provide pictures on posters that you can put up in your area or on our Lost Pets Register.
Taking pictures of cats can be difficult because they can move very quickly and unexpectedly, they are their own masters so do not expect any help from them. If you want to get good pictures of the most important thing is time, patience and a little preparation.
First of all it’s best to turn the flash off, use a fill flash only if you have to but ideally no flash at all. From a basic point and shoot camera the flash will be aimed directly at the cat and will result in some very unnatural poses and could include red eye or the reflective green eyes of the cat.
Most people these days have a digital camera, if so just set your camera to an automatic setting (sports or action mode if possible), this automatically sets the cameras aperture and shutter speed. Remember to let the camera do the work; all you have to do is focus on the shot.
Select a background that is as plain as possible, like the grass of your backyard, natural coloured patio or a solid colour carpet in your house. A place where you can utilize natural light is best and the area is as uncluttered as possible or at least well into the background so to be out of focus.
To start taking pictures it is best to get down to their level which may require you laying on the ground, try not to take pictures from too far above your cat as this will give a less natural look to your cat. If you have a telephoto lens this will enable you to stay in one place and still obtain close up shoots. Recognize that most cats will simply come toward you and rub against you which means they will be to close for a good shot so when you raise a camera to take a picture of them act like you are not interested in them.
Be as quiet as possible and it’s ideal to be alone with no one else around to distract your cat. Wait until they are focused on something other than you or are simply relaxing and doing what they naturally do. It could take anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours so remember to be patient. They will sooner or later relax which will give you the perfect opportunity to take your pictures. When they are relaxed remember to make slow movements, nothing sharp and quick to draw their attention away from what they are doing and to you instead.
Take as many photos’ as you can. If you have a digital camera there’s no reason not to take hundreds over a few. You never know which ones you’ll use and the odds are in your favour the more photos’ you have.
There you have it, it’s no great secret. The trick is to be quiet, have patience and a lot of spare time. Don’t expect to be able to grab the pictures in ten minutes because that’s very unlikely. Set aside a morning or afternoon and remember the simple tips and then you may just get those extra special pictures of your cat.
If you want a picture that’s a little different like them drinking out of the tap be sure to keep your camera near the sink, keep the batteries charged and when you cat goes to drink you will be all set. Shots like these take a little bit more planning but may produce just that little extra special picture of your beloved cat.

Owning Fluffy And Playful Ragdoll Kittens
October 22, 2010 by Guest Author · Leave a Comment
One of the most beautiful cat breeds is a Ragdoll. The Ragdoll Kittens are born with blue eyes and very distinct coats. This breed has a very placid temperament and they are affectionate and playful. The breeder gave them the name as Ragdoll because they go limp and relaxed when people pick them up.
History tells that the breed is a mix between Persian and Siamese breeds and the Ragdoll characteristics of their floppy and docile nature suggest that history could be accurate. They are also intelligent and gentle. There is also a myth that these cats are completely resistant to pain.
They are large in their frames and when females are grown, they weigh between eight and fifteen pounds whilst grown males weigh between twelve and twenty pounds. The size classifies them as one of the largest domestic cat breeds. Their eyes are mostly blue or other shades of blue and their coats are medium length that very rarely sheds.
The cats are quiet and do not often meow or complain. They seem to have traits associated with dogs in the sense that they like following people around the house and they like welcoming their human family back home. They love sleeping in beds, love attention and they accept strangers in their home.
Their furs come in six different colors which are lilac, cream, seal and lilac. Kittens are all born with white coats and when they are about two years old, their coat color is true to what it will be. There are also cats with mixed coats which are known as tortoise shell coats . These coats are not known to matt. There are tuffs between their toes and in their ears and the hair of the ears, tail and face is darker than the other hair.
Although they look very much like Birman cats, they have white chins which is the distinction needed to classify them. These are also larger cats and breeders use the head shape and much larger and distinct bone structure of Ragdolls to identify them from Birman cats.
Cats are known to be independent and standoffish, but this breed is not. Although they are playful and alert, they are strictly indoor cats and have no fighting skills to fend from animals and any other threats. For a family who would love a doll like cat, Ragdoll Kittens will surely be irresistible.

Tennessee Walking Horse Mane And Tail Grooming
September 29, 2010 by Guest Author · Leave a Comment
Tennessee Walking Horses of all riding styles look far more beautiful when they have a long, flowing mane and tail keeping time with their steps. This really accentuates the beauty of these magnificent horses. Your Tennessee Walking Horse can be gorgeous in no time at all if you follow these simple steps.
First, you need to untangle your walking horse’s mane and tail. Do not ever use a comb of any kind on your horse. A comb will prevent you from gaining a long, luxurious mane and tail more than any other grooming equipment you use on your horse. Use a stiff bristle human hair brush to detangle the mane and tail.
Start at the bottom of the mane or tail and work your way up to the top where the roots are. Detangle small sections at a time. I like to spray the hair heavily with a spray shine product such as show sheen or laser sheen to help me get it untangled. If it’s really badly tangled, I use Cowboy Magic for serious detangling. I still use the same method on all my Tennessee Walking Horses, de-tangling from the bottom, working my way up to the top as I make progress.
Once you have the entire mane and tail detangled, you need to wash it. Any regular shampoo will do fine. I like to follow up with a good conditioner. If you are using the homemade rapid growth formula that I use on all my Tennessee Walking Horses, this is when I apply it to the roots and rub it in real good with my fingers. (To get the recipe to make the rapid growth formula, see below.)
The next step I do with my walking horse’s tail is to braid it from the bottom of the tail to the bottom of the tail bone. Be sure to leave it loose around the bottom of the tail bone so it doesn’t irritate your horse. I seal the very bottom of the braid with black plastic electrician’s tape. Never use a rubber band, as this will break the hair.
As the tail grows longer, I fold the tail, doubling it up below the bone. Then I apply another piece of electrician’s tape to secure the fold below the bone. This is all you need to do to give most Tennessee Walking horses the best chance to grow their tail naturally.
If you want to drastically speed up the growth rate of your Tennessee Walking Horse’s mane and tail by up to 3″ to 4″ per month, you can go to Secret growth rate Recipe and get the homemade rapid growth rate recipe and more mane and tail growth rate tips. Before you know it, all your friends will be jelous of your Tennessee Walking Horse!
Buying Or Adopting Cattle Dogs – Which Is Better?
September 17, 2010 by Guest Author · Leave a Comment
Everybody loves to have a dog at home – not only for the sake of having one but also treating them as part of their family. Aussie cattle dogs are friendly and dependable. Buying a cattle dogs requires a fair amount of money so instead of buying one why not try to adopt one.
There are lots of Aussie cattle dogs out there who are looking for a home and a master. These cattle dogs are often a victim of certain adverse situations. Either they are discarded by their owner, or got lost so they end up homeless and living on the streets. Adopting a dog is one of the greatest ways to help them and provide them with love and shelter.
However, most people are worried about adopting cattle dogs. They have no guarantee that the one they will get are healthy or aggressive. Nevertheless, some animal shelters are very strict on taking care of cattle dogs. They will check first if the cattle dogs are in good health condition and has a good temperament. They dont put those dogs up for adoption unless they pass this check. Another thing is that they often also offer in-house training to make sure adopters would end up well behaved Aussie cattle dogs.
If you already decided to adopt a cattle dog, you can visit a nearest animal shelter. Discuss with them what are you looking for and the in-charge staff there will explain what kind of dog will suit you and your family. Keep in mind that if you have small child or a baby, getting an older and larger cattle dog is not a great option, or if you’re living in a small apartment.
When you finally decide on a dog and you are going to take them home, the first thing you need to consider is that a new home or environment may be overwhelming for them. It will take some time before they will adjust to their new home and the best thing initially to do is keep your cattle dog on a leash and slowly introduce them to their new home. Accompany them to each room and let them get use with it. Once you feel that your Aussie cattle dog is now “at home”, you can remove his/her leash and let them move freely inside your house.
Let your dog find their spot. If they finally settle down in a certain area, you can put a blanket (if you still don’t have a dog bed) temporarily for them to sleep on, in order for them to be comfortable and help your Aussie cattle dog settle in.
You will notice at first that your cattle dog may seem quiet but don’t be alarmed; this is just a part of the adjusting process. After a few days, they will get comfortable with their new family.
Adopting Aussie cattle dogs is a great way to get a new buddy and give them a new and happy family. Adopting cattle dogs – Is it a great idea?
