Boom In Gold Prices Prompts Thefts

November 3, 2010 by Guest Author · Leave a Comment

Police believe “cash for gold” companies are prompting a recent surge of burglaries across the UK. MPs are now calling for the numerous adverts to be banned from our screens as burglars are tempted by the easy cash. The highest gold prices in recent years mean that companies can promise a profit by sending unwanted or broken jewellery to them through the post.

Events in North Yorkshire have provoked concern, as a disproportionate number of burglaries in Harrogate have involved the theft of gold jewellery. “We have had a concern for some time that “cash for gold” makes jewellery more attractive to steal”, Head of Harrogate Police Superintendent Ken McIntosh spoke of the crimes. He blamed the simplicity of the process, which allows gold to be posted with no checks to the provenance or legality of the gold.

It is also harder to catch thieves in the act as they carry “cash for gold” bags with them, which they can post directly after leaving the scene, and when caught by police will have nothing on them to prove they were involved in the burglary. Jewellery is now the target of theft rather than vehicles and easily saleable items like games consoles or DVD players that thieves typically looked to steal. Recent burglaries are thought to be causing an increase in home insurance rates in certain areas of the country.

To tackle the problem North Yorkshire Police are now working alongside the Post Office to clarify the laws on searching post which is thought to contain stolen property. The scheme may be rolled out across the country as authorities have recognised this may be a national trend. “Cash for gold” companies are may be forced to increase their security measures, for instance checking the provenance of the gold and perhaps only exchanging gold in a face to face environment.

In the meantime, home owners are urged to stay vigilant and to increase the security of their homes.

The price of silver costume jewellery is very reasonable and costume jewellery makes a wonderful gift.

The Celtic Cross & Its Mysterious History

September 29, 2010 by Guest Author · Leave a Comment

The Celtic Cross is a very popular piece of Celtic jewelry, one that people look to for both the enjoyment that comes with wearing it, as well as when it comes to the learning about the mysterious history behind it. What follows is a brief description of the cross and the limited knowledge we have regarding its history.

Celt history is still an area that includes great differences in terms of understanding, but quite a few scholars trace it to Ireland and the time period of the ninth Century. The earliest forms of the cross have been named the recumbent cross-slab. These versions laid down flat, as opposed to being erected.

Later, a rounded top came into the picture as erected cross-slabs were now standing in an upright position. Whether or not they were lying down or standing erect, some similarities included decorative spirals, key designs, and the interlaced knotwork designs that so many contemporaries associate with Celtic designer jewelry.

What are called erect free standing Celtic Crosses came next. These also became quite elaborate and many different types of stone were used. A wider base was incorporated into this version of the cross and the effect was that of a taller cross as the head of the slab was cleared of rock.

The term “free” standing comes from the fact that the cross was now freed from the rock. In this version, the arms of the cross were extended beyond the inner ring as the inner sections between the rings and arms were designed to be recessed.

It’s important to understand that the above history of the Celtic Cross is only one of many you may run across. Both Catholics and Presbyterians have claimed it as their own while those of Welsh, Irish and Scottish decent have claimed it as their own.

Irish Catholics claim that the circle in the Celtic Cross symbolizes eternity and how God’s love is endless. This interpretation is usually woven into the story of the crucifixion and the mystery surrounding the hope of salvation offered up by Christ through his resurrection.

Then again, you may also hear the account of how the cross was carved from the stones of the Druids and were carved in the form of a cross to hide the fact that they were really phallic symbols. The sun, which was something worshipped by the Druids, is said to be represented by the circle.

Another legend, based in the Irish history, says that St. Patrick came up with the very first Celtic Cross when he drew a circle that represented the pagan moon goddess over a Latin cross. This version is one that represents the conversion of Druids to Christianity as St. Pete changed some of the old Druid rituals into newer Christian ones.

As one can see, it’s difficult to ascertain the exact history of the Celtic Cross. For many in our modern era, it’s enough to simply enjoy the personal interpretation of the emotional feelings that come with wearing this wonderful type of jewelry.

When it comes to finding the definite best Celtic jewelry, we recommend only one source. Peter Stone provides a wide selection of designer jewelry that will provide you the emotions you’re looking for from your jewelry selection.

Why Teens Go For Silver Jewellery

September 21, 2010 by Guest Author · Leave a Comment

Most common words associated with teens are like – wild, unpredictable, rebellious, etc. As lots of the persons now labelling the teens as such had once themselves behaved similarly when they were themselves teens, so it seems rather a little unfair so they can be complaining when others follow sooth. All this being said, teens are definitely somewhat more complex than people of other age groups.

The teens in turn don’t have much faith in a lot of the ways, the rhymes, and the reasons that folks who got there before them had cooked up. They strive to be different, and to find their own identities. This is quite obvious from the sort of music they go for and also quite visible from how they dress. Fashion is one area where they contributed much in making a great deal of difference. And when we say fashion, the jewelry they wear is an essential part of it.

Jewellery made from sterling silver is very popular among today’s teens. Many reasons exist for why this is so. One reason is that for many teens, yellow gold represents ‘tradition’, less trendy, and for some, it’s really a bit too showy. Today, sterling silver jewelry collections are comprised of thousands of new designs, designs that suit the type of outfits teens today love. It features a more casual feel that matches with the hip hop or jazzy look or whatever the latest trend in town be. Sterling silver jewellery also goes in hand with the current ‘bling’ jewellery fashion.

Another important reason is because of the price tag on the jewellery. The buying powers of the teens are generally much less compared to the grown ups. For the majority of the teens, the allowances they get from their parents or the money they get from their part-time jobs are hardly enough for buying a diamond studded gold ring. So it will be not very surprising that they select the much less expensive but almost equally fashionable jewellery made form cheaper metals and stones like cubic zirconia instead of diamonds and rubies. And even if one particular teenager happens youngster should be throw money for an expensive jewellery, she might still choose the less expensive ones so that she can match the remainder of her gang. As much as they like have their own identity, it’s also very important for the teens to be identified within the group.

Whether the teenager is dining out in join a slam poetry performance or to the school prom, there are most often two things on her mind. One is that she wants to look a little different and unique or keep a little mystical overtone. Strangely, the other thing is that she still wants to feel area of the clique. That’s why most of them chose the not too splashy but still unique type of jewellery that’ll paint for them the type of image they need to keep. And after all, they do not have to spend so much for it this way.
