Why Not Buy Her An Unusual Gift
November 6, 2010 by Guest Author · Leave a Comment
Valentines Day, birthdays and anniversaries are occasions when you just don’t know what to buy for your special someone. Its far too easy to pick up some luxury chocolates or a bouquet of flowers these days, you can probably pick them up while you’re filling up the car on the way over so why not go for something with a little more thought but just like the flowers and chocolates, will get eaten used or discarded.
Cupids everywhere are looking for the perfect Valentine’s day gift for lovers, if you are one of them, then we’ve got you covered! What could be more quintessential for Valentine’s day than chocolate? Hmmm… maybe your favorite wine variatal dipped in San Francisco’s Guittard chocolate? Sweet
A gift of jewelry is nice, but an engraved piece becomes an heirloom. Use a pet nickname, a simple monogram, or an old-fashioned and cute JM + ML.
For some, it just wouldn’t be Valentine’s Day without that box of chocolates. This year, don’t just pick up a cheap box from the drug store, get something really special. My favorite chocolate, Jacques Torres, now has his famous chocolates for sale online at mrchocolate.com. Along with traditional favorites, his unusual flavors include Earl Grey Tea, Love Potion #9, Port Wine, and Wicked Fun – a spicy dark chocolate with chili pepper and cinnamon. Make sure a card with a long paragraph included in and tell your lover about how much your Valentine gift means.
This is a great one for couples that are friendly with other couples. You and your pals can join together to each give her and her pals plane tickets for a “girl’s weekend”, or him and his friends tickets for a “boys weekend”. She or he will love that you were so thoughtful and will know that you planned ahead. What would Valentine’s Day be without a bouquet of flowers, a box of chocolates, and a sensual perfume fragrance?
If giving lingerie for Valentine’s Day is too predictable for you, take it a step further by dressing up the bedroom. Buy a new set of luxurious sheets. Set a bouquet of flowers next to the bed, and decorate with candles and rose petals. You’ll enjoy the ambiance on February 14th, but you’ll also get to enjoy those sheets for a long time to come.
You can find a range of websites selling unusual gifts and novelty gifts all over the place and prices are competitive so shop around.
Pope’s Visit Brings Unusual Gifts
November 6, 2010 by Guest Author · Leave a Comment
After a period of welcome obscurity, Tony Blair is suddenly everywhere again, making peace in the Middle East, promoting his memoir, and now even getting himself involved in the pope’s state visit to Britain. This is the fault of the Vatican’s official newspaper, L’Osservatore Romano, which chose to publish on its front page an article by Blair about Cardinal John Henry Newman, whom the pope is to beatify in Birmingham on Sunday. There is no reason to think that Blair, a recent convert to Catholicism, is particularly knowledgeable about this most famous of all British converts, but his article is interesting all the same for what it says about its author.
The event is surrounded by security, terror threats and controversy but what has been overlooked is the amount of people jumping on the bandwagon and capitalising on the visit with souvenirs and commemorative gifts. But as you would expect, there is a lot of junk on offer which has been designed to make a cheap buck out of all the pontiff’s supporters. Street vendors are offering baseball caps for up to 20. And many are flogging pilgrims t-shirts with the option to customise with the name of their church.
I can’t imagine why this matters, but the answers revealed by Professor Robin Dunbar this week are that most people have around 150 friends of which only five belong to their inner circle – friends they see at least once a week and who will offer emotional support when needed. On that basis, I have no close friends at all, for living in the country I see nobody except the gardener “at least once a week”. But even those who do manage to do so are doomed to lose a couple of them if they have the misfortune to fall in love.
Blair may be on the defensive here because he has often been criticised by orthodox Catholics for supporting legal abortion and same-sex unions. So he cites Newman again as saying that there can never be an end to the development of church doctrine and that all doctrine must enjoy the consensus of the whole “body of the faithful” to be considered infallible. “I doubt if this voice is yet taken seriously enough on moral questions, or if we have yet fully digested the implications of these ideas,” Blair writes. “The tendency of some religious leaders to bundle a large number of different ideas into a bag marked ‘secularism’, then treat it as a sinister package, is divisive in pluralist societies.”
After being informed of the arrests, the Pope confirmed he would continue with his arrangements which will be unaffected by the developments. Hundreds of police officers are involved in the multi million pound operations to protect the pope on his visit along with Vatican security and members of the Swiss Guard.
The sale of unique gifts and novelty gifts is said to be worth tens of millions of pounds during the Pope’s first ever state visit to the UK.
Coffee Giants Unite For Sustainable Change

For more than four years, Hellyar, supply chain manager for Dunkin’ Donuts, has hunted for an alternative to the much maligned Styrofoam cup – long enough to earn him the nickname “Joey Cups.” The ideal container would have to be recyclable or compostable, keep coffee hot, and not cost franchisees too much.
It might as well be the Holy Grail. Neither Joey Cups and his team of 12, nor anyone else in the industry, have been able to find it. So now they have decided to join forces. For the first time, Dunkin’, Starbucks, and Tim Horton are working together to conquer the sustainable container. On Earth Day this April, the competitors convened with cup manufacturers, waste haulers, and municipal officials at a cup summit held at MIT.
Since then, they have been sharing prototypes of innovative designs, researching ways to make it financially worthwhile for communities to recycle used coffee cups, and designing a pilot program for a waste-free zone at Faneuil Hall Marketplace where everything would be recycled or composted.
Moving towards paper may not be the answer either, according to industry sceptics, with the coffee giants’ joint initiative to encourage paper mills undertaking the recycling of coffee cups to produce quality boxes from the reused material, viewed as a better solution.
Many consumers (and even some coffee executives new to the struggle) think there is an easy answer: switch to paper. But it’s not that simple. It takes roughly 20 million trees and 12 billion gallons of water to manufacture the 58 billion paper cups that end up in the trash every year. Most communities do not have the means or equipment needed to recycle these cups, which involves separating the paper container from the wax-like inner lining that prevents your java from leaking out.
Despite being made up of recycled material, Starbucks cups are technically not recyclable due to the waxy coating. Where many local coffee shops have begun to use recyclable cups at a higher cost, Starbucks lists on their website that they will not introduce eco-cups until 2015.
The problem is not in the accessibility of the technology, but in the commitment from the retailers to take a financial step to develop these products and implement them. If being 70% more environmentally friendly will reduce a company’s profit margins by 5%, they are unwilling to do it.
One time, Hellyar brought some new cups made of eco-friendly materials to Dunkin’s quality assurance lab to test them out. He poured a fresh hot brew in them and returned to his desk. A few minutes later, a research and development worker came running after him, cursing that two dozen coffee cups were leaking all over the lab.
Researchers are still trying to find easily produced, economically viable biodegradable cups but for now we will have to make do with the environmentally unfriendly insulated cups we are used to.

Before you apply to become a magistrate there are a few important things to consider. You do not need formal qualifications to become a magistrate but you do need to be able to prove you possess the following qualities; that you are of good character, have a good understanding and good communication skills, show social awareness, are able to demonstrate maturity and sound judgement. It is also important that you can show commitment to the position.
Due to the need to maintain public confidence in the fairness of the legal system some people will be unable to become magistrates. If your career has a conflict of interest (such as if you are a member of the police force) then you will be unable to become a magistrate.
People undertaking the role of a magistrate should have the respect of others and be seen as of good character by the general public. It is therefore very unlikely that you will be accepted if you are an undischarged bankrupt for example. Magistrates are there to set an example. It is also worth bearing in mind that those with a history of driving offences may also be disqualified.
People who are disabled can work as magistrates and applications are welcome, however if your health will prevent you from fulfilling your duties then you may be deemed as not eligible.
There are lots of magistrate’s courts throughout Wales and England, if you are interested in applying to become a magistrate then sitting in on court may be a good idea.
There are a few important issues to consider before you apply. It is important to consider your availability as training can last for around twenty hours in the first instance, although this can usually be undertaken outside of normal working hours. It is also a good idea to consider whether or not you will actually be able to get away from work, it is a legal requirement that employers allow time off for magistrates duties.
You will also need to decide which court you wish to work in, you can choose a court close to where you work or live for convenience.

Boom In Gold Prices Prompts Thefts

Police believe “cash for gold” companies are prompting a recent surge of burglaries across the UK. MPs are now calling for the numerous adverts to be banned from our screens as burglars are tempted by the easy cash. The highest gold prices in recent years mean that companies can promise a profit by sending unwanted or broken jewellery to them through the post.
Events in North Yorkshire have provoked concern, as a disproportionate number of burglaries in Harrogate have involved the theft of gold jewellery. “We have had a concern for some time that “cash for gold” makes jewellery more attractive to steal”, Head of Harrogate Police Superintendent Ken McIntosh spoke of the crimes. He blamed the simplicity of the process, which allows gold to be posted with no checks to the provenance or legality of the gold.
It is also harder to catch thieves in the act as they carry “cash for gold” bags with them, which they can post directly after leaving the scene, and when caught by police will have nothing on them to prove they were involved in the burglary. Jewellery is now the target of theft rather than vehicles and easily saleable items like games consoles or DVD players that thieves typically looked to steal. Recent burglaries are thought to be causing an increase in home insurance rates in certain areas of the country.
To tackle the problem North Yorkshire Police are now working alongside the Post Office to clarify the laws on searching post which is thought to contain stolen property. The scheme may be rolled out across the country as authorities have recognised this may be a national trend. “Cash for gold” companies are may be forced to increase their security measures, for instance checking the provenance of the gold and perhaps only exchanging gold in a face to face environment.
In the meantime, home owners are urged to stay vigilant and to increase the security of their homes.
The price of silver costume jewellery is very reasonable and costume jewellery makes a wonderful gift.
Puma Scores Big With Football Viral Campaign

The boys from Leicester, Kasabian are already popular with the footballing crowd as their songs have been used in many football ad campaigns, highlights and match promotions. They produce an indie-rock-electro sound which seems to strike a chord with the tempo of football and the excitement it creates; this is why they have recently signed a three year deal with the Barclays premier league.
Senior Adidas marketing directors claimed that 2010 has been their most successful campaign but have released no figures. Australian marketing director Simon Millar noted that it would be foolish to measure sales just yet as “most people buy their footy boots at the start of the season”.
Competing with bitter rivals Nike, the company splashed over 400 million US dollars on the campaign which included designing and producing the controversial Jubilani ball. However Nike stole much of the attention at the last minute with their ‘write the future’ campaign which was viewed more than 15 million times on YouTube alone.
Adidas spent an estimated 120 million US dollars on sponsoring the world cup, something which it has done since 1970. According to market researchers Sport+Markt, Adidas had the greatest visibility in terms of teams and players.
The band are no strangers to the world of football, earlier in 2010 singer Tom Meighan launched Umbro’s England World Cup Kit and their music is regularly used on TV, especially Match of The Day and Sky Sports.
The agency had to be careful about how the video was filmed and released due to FIFA’s rigorous regulations. The plan worked as they avoided the ridiculous costs of officially being associated with the competition like Adidas, who paid 250m just to put their ball on the pitch.
One by one the star players featured in the ads fell victim to what became known as the ‘Nike curse’ and were knocked out of the competition, a complete branding disaster. It seems in choosing to endorse some of the world’s biggest premiership players Nike had neglected to consider the most successful teams and thus lost the branding race.
Puma have managed some endorsement success with their successful Puma King football boot. They narrowly missed out on producing the new Liverpool football shirt
Toning Tips: How To Get Trim With Reebok Easytone
October 29, 2010 by Guest Author · Leave a Comment
Reebok have once again called on the stunning Kelly Brook in another campaign for the sportswear giant. But to the disappointment of many, she will be keeping her clothes on, unlike the last time she modelled nude for their line of trainers in a nationwide naked billboard campaign.
The glamorous brunette is the face of the new line of trainers said to improve tone and strength in the legs and bum via a unique unstable sole. She will also be their spokeswoman for their new Jukari Fit to Flex workout. Reebok created the workout with inspiration from the performances of Cirque du Soleil, it targets core muscles and the upper body by using a light elastic band that can be used in a variety of ways.
Kelly, now 30, claims she is happy with her body and who she is, but still maintains a fitness regime. She says “I’ve hit 30 and I have accepted this is my body shape, and I’m happy with what I am and who I am. My legs are quite toned at the moment and I have a small waist so I dress to accentuate it. I have a bigger bum and bigger boobs but I’m generally small-boned. I’ve got real boobs and I guess they could be a bit perkier! But in general I’m pretty happy with everything.”
The model turned actress enjoys swimming, yoga and dancing but focuses on her dance and fitness classes, which made her the perfect candidate for this exercise product aimed primarily at women.
You are able to wear the trainers, flip flops or sandals whenever you want and as long as you’re standing, they are working your muscles. It’s like sitting on an exercise ball all day rather than an office chair.
So if you’re off doing the weekly shop or just walking around the workplace, your legs will be in constant workout. The company commissioned a study to determine how effective the trainers were and the results noted at least an 11% increase in muscle activity in the calves and gluteus during simple activities. However none of the subjects notices a difference in aching or physical exertion.
Consumers have so far gone mad for the Reebok easytone range and there is rumour of further, more casual models to be added to the popular easytone trainers
Reebok Easytone: Fit Or Fad?
October 29, 2010 by Guest Author · Leave a Comment
Sports giants Reebok recently brought out a range of trainers designed to improve toning in the legs and bum. They called the range ‘easytone’, which spanned from the concept of the shoe. The trainers are designed with a convex sole which creates instability; it forces the foot to balance on a smaller surface area than usual. This means the leg is constantly trying to find a balance point and keeps the muscles working on a small scale, even while walking.
The concept seems too good to be true; you exercise the same amount or simply walk around and your legs and behind get a workout that would usually take hours a day at the gym. But is this all just some marketing campaign or do they actually work? A team of scientists with expertise in exercise, sport and physiology at the University of Wisconsin conducted a study to test the claims on each of the shoes.
John Porcari PhD, who led the tests, agrees that the trainers should work in theory as they make the muscles work harder by creating instability that the body attempts to counteract. The shoes are based on a curved sole which creates an unstable surface which forces the wearer’s body to constantly struggle to find equilibrium.
So it’s like wearing a permanent wobble board you might find in a gym, and f you have ever tried one of those you will know that it certainly gives you enough of a workout. But does such a small difference in a shoe really make a difference to your workout?
Kelly recently launched a movie career and is starring in the film Piranha 3D. She only studied at drama school for three years when she was younger but said this started her love of dancing, which she still does to keep in shape.
She said, “I have always been energetic and active and I’ve always loved dancing. I’ve been surrounded by people into fitness and health for a long time, so have always been conscious about what I put in my body. I’m also aware of keeping myself in shape for my job and general lifestyle.
Consumers can get their hand on the easytone trainers in stores and online and there is rumour of a extended Reebok easytone due next year.
Liverpool FC Sell To Red Sox
October 29, 2010 by Guest Author · Leave a Comment
New England Sports Ventures (NESV) successfully completed their takeover bid of Liverpool Football Club earlier this week. The high profile company, owner of the Boston Red Sox, had faced a long and expensive legal battle with previous owners George Gillette and Tom Hicks to take control of the club. The 300 million sale has caused fans to rejoice as the clubs massive debts have been written off.
Former owners George Gillette and Tom Hicks took out a loan from the Royal Bank of Scotland to purchase the club in 2007 which has since caused a series of crises. The club had till 15 October this year to repay debts or face being taken as an asset by the bank. RBS’s position on the loan had deterred potential buyers from placing a formal bid and to make matters worse Hicks and Gillette refused to budge on their massive 800 million asking price for the club.
When NESV began talks with RBS over the sale of the club, Hicks and Gillette immediately enlisted the help of a Texas court to block the sale. Due to UK regulations this was lifted this week. What has become apparent over the past years is the pair’s blatant disregard for the future of the club as they desperately attempt to line their own pockets. They were reluctant to sell to NESV as it became apparent they would make an extremely small return on the sale. They are not launching a legal battle against the bank to claim $1.6 billion in compensation.
Meanwhile, Liverpool fans are delighted at the takeover and are eagerly awaiting improvements at Anfield. NESV are also looking into moving the club to a larger and more modern ground. Primary owner, John W. Henry announced the company’s commitment to winning, and promised to return Liverpool FC “to greatness on and off the field for the long-term”.
It seems that the changes have not inspired Liverpool to victory just yet though, as in Sunday’s match against Everton in the Merseyside Derby they experienced a shattering defeat for the first time in 4 years. The season has not gone well for the club in general and they are currently in relegation for their awful performance at their last few matches. However, new manager Roy Hodgson hopes that the cloud will be lifted from Anfield and allow Liverpool to finally concentrate on the football.
