Looking At Bedbugs

November 17, 2010 by Guest Author · Leave a Comment

There are in fact quite a few types of bed bug, but the one that most people mean by ‘bedbugs’ is Cimex lectularius. Other species of bedbugs will extract human blood, but usually only if their preferred host, like poultry, is unavailable.

Bedbugs are tiny, but not too small to see. Adults are about four or five millimetres in length and one-and-a-half to three millimetres wide. They are brownish in colour, but may appear banded because they are covered in short hairs.

Having said that, they are still not easy to get a good look at, because they are very quick and only come out at night. In fact, their favourite dinner time is more of an early breakfast, because they normally dine on us an hour before dawn. If you want to see or catch some bedbugs, this is the best time too do it, because you may see them struggling to get home with full bellies to sleep it off for a few days before going out again.

So, rather than waste your time, it is probably better to look at a number of pictures of bedbugs first so that you know what you are looking for.. Bedbugs are attracted by heat and CO2, so one method of trying to catch a few is putting a bar of soap in a centimetre of water and then lying on the bed. After half an hour, get the soap and whip the bed clothes back. You can dab up any bed bugs with the soap.

Then you will have plenty of time to study them under a magnifying lens. If they are not residing in your mattress and you are certain that you have bed bugs, check behind any loose-fitting woodwork.

They love to get into dark cracks to sleep it off and skirting boards or architrave are perfect. So is damaged plaster, broken lino or ripped wall paper.

Hardly any crack is too thin for them, because they are so thin themselves, as you can observe from photos. They look as if they have been crushed. However, the nymphs or babies are very small, a bit rounder and frequently whitish. It takes six moultings for a nymph to become an adult and the moulted skins look just like the insect that abandoned it, but with nothing inside it – as if it had been sort of sucked out.

The bedbug’s skin is actually the key to killing it, as bedbugs have become tolerant to most everyday insecticides. Their skin, or exoskeleton, has a waxy layer on it to prevent dehydration. If you can scrape off that wax, the insect will dry out and die.

Some modern bedbug sprays include finely powdered glass or silicone which sticks to the insect and as it wriggles into crevices, the powder scrapes the wax off. Diatomaceous earth was used for the same reason long ago and it is making a comeback in the attempt to eradicate bed bugs. It is non-toxic and environmentally friendly, so safe to use in your home and around your pets.

Personal Skin Care Routines

November 17, 2010 by Guest Author · Leave a Comment

The theory of personal skin care is very subjective and differs in different parts of the world, because climate has an effect on how you should look after your skin too. Some people, mostly men, follow absolutely no skin care tasks at all except everyday washing; others also put some cream on regularly too; still others add an infrequent visit to the beauty salon and others go to a sauna or Turkish baths as well.

Living in a hot climate requires frequent showering, because dust and bacteria can enter the open pores more easily causing dermatitis, whereas living in a cold climate can cause dry skin requiring frequent moisturizing. This is why skin care should be a routine tailored to the personality of the person and the climate of the area.

On top of those factors, different people have different skin types. The most common skin types are normal, dry, oily, sensitive and mixed). So, you will have to ascertain your skin type and work out a personal skin care routine with all these factors in mind. A fundamental skin care routine for people with normal skin might be as follows.

Cleansing: there are many different cleansing agents on the market, so you will have to trial a few until you find one that suits you. Your cleanser should contain oil, water and surfactant(s). The idea is that the oil and the surfactants lift the dirt and the water washes it away.

Some cleansers are quite harsh, others contain soap, try to avoid both of these kinds. The water you use to wash away your cleanser is important too. Try to use unchlorinated luke warm water, because chlorine damages skin and both hot and cold water are not beneficial for it either. Do not cleanse too often or you will lose your skin’s natural oils.

Exfoliation: skin renews itself by killing off the uppermost layer and creating a new layer underneath. This dead layer of skin will erode and fall off on its own, but you can speed up this process by exfoliating or rubbing the dead skin off. Dead skin cells are just that – dead – and nothing you can do will improve or save them, but they do soak up (and therefore waste) the lotions you rub on, preventing some of that goodness getting to where you want it to go.

Therefore, exfoliating will enhance the effectiveness of the lotions that you put on. If you have oily or normal skin, you should exfoliate four or five times per week, whereas people with dry or sensitive skin should do it only once or twice a week. Exfoliate a couple of times more a week in hot, humid weather.

Moisturizers: moisturizing is perhaps the most critical skin care routine after washing. Every skin type needs to be moisturized, however, there are so many types of moisturizer that you will have to discover a good one by trial and error. You should know within a week or so whether your moisturizer is good for you. Moisturizer is best applied when the skin is still moist.

Sunscreen: the sun’s UV rays are injurious to your skin, so it is best to filter them out when you go outside, even when it is cloudy. Factor 15 is the sunscreen for ‘normal’ use, sun and skin.

Customized Panties

November 1, 2010 by Guest Author · Leave a Comment

I hope that you do not think that the topic of panties or knickers is rude or taboo, because I am not out to shock or upset anyone with this piece. No, rather, this article is being written to point out the fun that you can have with your underwear. After all, underwear is not rude or dirty and the vast majority of people in the world wear it, I should think.

But I do not want to talk about men’s underpants in this article and I do not even want to talk about commonplace knickers, I want to talk about personalized panties. Personalized panties are all the rage. In fact they have been for a long time, but before you either had to do the custom embroidery yourself or you had to put up with the off-the-shelf personalized panties.

Often their offerings were ‘not quite right’, if you know what I mean. Typical writing on personalized panties was: ‘Unwrap Before You Eat’ or ‘Abandon Hope All Ye Who Enter Here’. They were a bit tawdry to say the least. Then came the: ‘I’m Dick’s Bit Of Fluff’ type, but they all wear a bit thin after a while, saucy as they may be.

That was a while ago and nowadays you can have written what you want on your personalized panties and you can do it online and have your secret underwear delivered to your door in a brown envelope, not that anyone would really be concerned these days.

There are loads of custom underwear suppliers, which for $10-12 will add three to five lines of text and a logo to your panties. You can choose from pre-written text and a range of images and logos or you can design and up load your own.

Do not get me wrong, you could just have something simple written on them like the days of the week – in Chinese. It does not have to be sexy, but it is better if it is.

This can be a huge source of pleasure for you and whomever you want to show your panties to. It is a great kick to be wearing personalized panties with something saucy written on them when you are looking at the person you fancy, especially if they do not know what you have on.

And when they do find out, they will have as much enjoyment at the saucy joke as you did. $10 or $12 is not a great deal for a good pair of panties and if you can have them personalized too and delivered to your door, it becomes a huge bargain. Try it and you will understand what I mean. You and your friend will get a huge kick out of your naughty personalized panties.

How To Kill Bed Bugs In Your Clothes

November 1, 2010 by Guest Author · Leave a Comment

You cannot tell where bed bugs are living; you cannot even guess, just by looking at a building. You could be sitting in a chair in a posh hotel waiting for someone to come down or you could be having tea at a friend’s house and you are equally as likely to pick up a bed bug.

The developed Western world has not been through this sort of situation for about sixty years. However, since 1995, bed bugs have been increasing practically unbridled and we are approaching the conditions people were living in before the Second World War. That is a very sad state of affairs indeed.

Especially when you appreciate that before the war, you could put a little poison down and kill them. These days, you cannot, because some bedbugs have become resistant to a lot of the insecticides normally available to domestic households. So, in one way we are worse off than we were 60 years ago and unless something comes to our rescue, it can only get worse.

Although bedbugs wreak most mayhem in a bed, that is not usually where people get them from. They also live in the creases of material in the seats of buses, trains, taxis, hotel rooms, restaurants and even airplanes. However, bedbugs are not taken home attached to your skin like a flea or a tick.

Rather they will creep into a hem or a pocket or under a collar, drawn by your body heat or breath and either go to sleep or lay eggs. A female can lay 300 eggs in a single day – not a great deal in insect terms, but do you want 301 bedbugs in your bedroom closet by the end of next week?

I am sure that you have become aware how difficult it is to completely avoid the risks of picking up bed bugs and taking them home. Bed bugs have natural enemies, but it is uncertain that you would rather have bed bugs than the insects that prey on them – cockroaches, ants, spiders and centipedes – and insecticides are not always effective.

The one thing that certainly kills them, besides being trodden on by a size ten army boot, is heat. No stages of the bedbug’s life can survive temperatures above 45c.

This may be noteworthy, because modern washing powders are intended to get clothes clean at 30c, thereby saving electricity, but they also unintentionally save the lives of the bedbugs on your clothing as well. You can make sure that your clothes are bedbug-free by washing them at 46-50c and you can kill existing bedbugs in your house by steam cleaning it, which is the professional way of exterminating an infestation of bedbugs.

It is time for people to be aware of this fairly new threat to their well-being. The key things you can do are: acquaint yourself with what a bedbug looks like and have your clothing cleaned at temperatures above 46c if you think that you may have been exposed to an infestation of bed bugs.

Essential Koi Pond Supplies

October 25, 2010 by Guest Author · Leave a Comment

If you are new to keeping koi carp in your garden fish pond, you may be asking yourself what supplies you have to keep in stock and what you can afford to buy as and when you need them. The answer to that question, is probably that it depends how far away your nearest pet shop is. However, it is a good idea to pick up supplies to put in stock, when you see that something is on special offer.

There are items that you should have at hand at all times, but there are others that are not vital and can be waited for for a few days when you discover a need for them. Some of the things suggested below become more important depending on the climate or the seasons prevailing where you live.

Filtration Pump; this is essential, but you can wait twenty-four hours. You need to bear in mind that the quality of your pond water will deteriorate quickly, if your pond filtration pump is out of action. Toxicity levels will rise in the water and stress levels will build up in your fish. Your fish will become sick fairly quickly and then they will die.

Pond Filters: this comes into the same category as the filtration pump for precisely the same reasons. However, you can make your own filter using sand, coconut fibres or something like that and then you should never run out.

Dechlorinator: water companies add chemicals like chlorine and fluoride to the water, but fish do not like them. Therefore, you have to eliminate them. This is easily achieved by adding a few capfuls of liquid dechlorinator. Buy a large bottle and it will last all year.

Test Kits: maintaining water quality is the main objective for every fish pond owner, so you have to check the water for ammonia and nitrite poisoning every week. This is considered essential kit.

Pond Salt and Baking Soda; are the cheapest ways of combatting water poisoning, so it is vital to have plentiful supplies of these items at all times.

Bags: one day you may need to transport one of your fish to the vets or take it to a quarantine tank, so you will need to keep a few bags on hand at all times. Make certain that they are large enough to hold your growing koi. These are essential.

Rubber Bands: you will need strong rubber bands to seal off the bags above, so they are indispensable too.

Fish Net: necessary for guiding your fish into the bags and extricating fallen leaves.

Bucket: this is better for catching your koi than a net, which has the ability to hurt their gills. Essential.

Koi Fish Food: koi need to be fed every day except in winter, but they can in fact last a couple of weeks without food because they also feed on flies, grubs and larvae. It actually depends on how big your pond is and whether you have overstocked it.

Leaf Net: in the autumn, it is easier to cast a net over your pond, than drag leaves out of it every day. It saves a lot of time.

Sandbags: a storm or even intense rainfall can flood your pond, allowing your fish to swim away. Sandbagging the pond before a storm is essential.
