A Funeral Director And His Major Duties

The main responsibility of a funeral director is taking care of everything in a funeral, from the pre-burial or pre-cremation rites to the actual handling of the deceased’s body.

The main responsibilities of a funeral director can be categorized into four, namely: moving the body, readying it for the service, making arrangements for the services where people may pay their last respects, and carrying out the ultimate procedures on the corpse.

The responsibilities of a funeral director range from publishing obituaries in the local electronic and print media to arranging for a vehicle to shift the body, in addition to other essential tasks like deciding the time and place for conducting the memorial service etc. In addition, funeral directors also look after things like flowers and bouquet arrangements for each ceremony, anointing and dressing the deceased, arrangement for transportation of the mourners from one service to another etc.

Other than these tasks, a funeral director also handles the necessary documentation that forms a part of the official formalities following a person’s death. He helps the family secure a death certificate. He is also entrusted with other tasks like helping the family with obtaining the insurance money and to take benefit of seniors’ burial scheme. He also solves problems related to clearance of pension and annuities of the deceased person to the lawful beneficiary and helps the family to estimate a budget for the services.

He also has to associate with a wide range of professionals to perform his tasks in an efficient and systematic way. He has to interact with not only the coffin makers and florists but also priests and doctors.

Lastly, it is essential for funeral directors to give some extra time and offer comfort and solace to the suffering family of the deceased, in order to help them tide over their sorrow. Some funeral directors ignore this responsibility, but it is an essential part of their service no doubt.
